You Are Invited

In his Reflections on the Psalms, C.S. Lewis describes an encounter with Scripture as, “… steeping ourselves in a Personality, acquiring a new outlook and temper, breathing a new atmosphere…” Is this your reality when you hear the Bible read each Sunday morning? Do you anticipate a truly “living and active” Word of God?  Are you being “transformed by the renewal of your mind” and “conformed to the image of his Son?” And will you then “put on the new self” and “walk by the Spirit” because you believe Scripture is “the power of God for salvation?” Or does Lewis’ striking description of hearing the Word of the LORD fall on deaf ears?
Writer, actor, playwright, and producer, David Payne, will be lecturing on “Public Speaking and the Public Reading of Scripture in Corporate Worship” at Erskine Theology Seminary on Monday, September 25th. Over the past two decades, he has drawn international attention and praise for his dramatic portrayals of C. S. Lewis. Payne is also the voice of the Experiencing the Word audio Bible, founder of Baby and Bird Productions, and previously served as managing director for a religious publishing company in the UK.
In order for us to be “doers” of the Word, Christians must first and foremost be hearers. So let us learn how to read well and to listen well so that God’s people become those who “…hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
