Dr. James Strobel Dies in Car Wreck

Erskine College’s 12th President died in a car wreck Wednesday. See the article below from the villages-news.com website. Dr. Strobel was President of Erskine College 1990-1998.

An 80-year-old Villager was killed in an accident at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday in Nassau County.

James Walter Strobel, a resident of the Village of Belvedere, was a passenger in a 2003 Ford van driven by Wayne Stuart Richardson, 75, of Hobe Sound. The van was making a left turn from eastbound SR-200 (A1A Highway) to travel northbound on Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Parol. A white Tractor-Trailer driven by Roger Wayne Youmans, 58, of Lyons, Ga. was traveling westbound on SR-200 in the right travel lane approaching the intersection.

Richardson failed to yield the right of way to Youmans while making the left turn, FHP said in its report. This caused the front of the tractor-trailer to collide with the right side of the van. Both vehicles then traveled off to the right side of the roadway where they came to a final rest.

Strobel, who moved to The Villages in May from Virginia, was pronounced dead at University of Florida Health. Strobel was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in The Villages. He was a retired college professor and president.

Richardson suffered serious injuries and was being treated at UF Health.

Youmans and a passenger in his truck, 33-year-old Jeffrey Lee Edwards, also of Lyons, Ga. did not suffer any injuries.
